On Friday night, Facebook will allow you to have your personalised vanity URL for your Facebook profile.

Instead of http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=615109271

You can now have http://www.facebook.com/stevekhart

You can sign up for a username starting at 9:01 p.m. PDT on Friday, June 12, 2009, by visiting http://www.facebook.com/username/. After selecting one for your application or company name, you will see a green check mark indicating that the name is available before you actually claim it.

Consisting of at least five characters (alphanumeric or full stop) the ability to register your http://www.facebook.co.uk/username will become available on 12:01am EDT on Saturday June 13th, so if you really want your name (and it happens to be John Smith) then I’d get there quickly as they’ll probably be gone pretty quick in this Facebook vanity URL land rush.

To stop people from getting a load of names this will only be available to accounts that are already open and active, and you will also need to be careful about what you choose because they will not be able to be changed after selection.

Here are my notes from last night’s Technology Council meeting in Los Angeles May 19th.

MySpace – Jason Oberfest

Its all about self expression.
Discovering new content.

Facebook - Paul Ollinger

Social media is becoming mainstream media. Its about sharing information. Sharing content
Giving permission of who can see what of my world.
No banner ads. Advertising looks like it is part of the content.
Targeted ads
Use fan pages as reader rewards pages. Offers deals and dscounts, they’re easy to measure their impact.
Use MySpace and facebook to target your advertisers on MySpace and facebook.Social recommendations. People spreading the news.

YouTube - Sam Cimino

Intuit tax “rap” is an example of using YouTube a marking tool. Sounded stupid at first, but worked well.
User generated ads. Show us your ocregister.
YouTube annotations – watch pages. Links within the video. Stringing content videos together.
Bottom third ad overlay. Links to advertisers.
Bloggers on YouTube
Tell you own story or someone else will.

Yammer - David Schwartz

Social Networking for internal use. Internal social network.
Use to find who’s who in you company.
Realtime communications
Use yammer for web support communications.
Ask questions and see responses. Becomes a knowledge base of answers.

Pringo - Majid Abai

Enterprise social networking platform
People want their voice to be heard.
Convergence of business portal and social network.
Earthquake broke on twitter befor it made it to the media websites
Evaluate products and services.

General notes

Media is any content people find entertaining.

Blogging company info
-no insider info
-say who you are
-dont attack others
-dont discuss company stock

People are talking about you or your business. Don’t ignore, it is happening. Embrace it. Good or bad, it is still press. You can’t control it, but you can engage it and use social networking sites and tools to get your message out.
